On the night before May 1st, German guys decorate a birch tree with colorful papers ribbons and place it in front of the bedroom window of the girl they love. In rural areas, they might even guard it through the night to make sure it’s still there when the lady wakes up (or comes home from a party). At the end of May the bloke comes to collect the tree and the girl will give him a crate of beer as appreciation for his effort.
My first boyfriend chopped the largest birch tree from my parents’ garden and stuck it in front of my window. That’s not quite how it goes…needless to say, my Dad was not impressed.
