Official Rules
NO PURCHASE OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. THE CHALLENGE IS INTENDED FOR PLAY IN THE UNITED STATES ONLY AND WILL BE GOVERNED BY U.S. LAW. DO NOT ENTER IF YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE AND LOCATED IN THE UNITED STATES AT THE TIME OF ENTRY.
This challenge is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook, Inc. or Instagram.
ELIGIBILITY: The Passion Passport: American Airlines® Challenge (the “Challenge”) is open to legal residents of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia who are 18 years of age or older and are located in the United States at the time of entry. Employees, contractors, directors, and officers of Sponsor, American Airlines, Inc. (together “Challenge Parties”), or either of their parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, distributors, sales representatives, retailers, or advertising, promotion, and judging agencies and all other service agencies involved with the Challenge, and members of the immediate family (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouse) and household of each such employee are not eligible to participate. By participating, entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules.
INSTRUCTIONS: To enter the Challenge, take (or locate a photo you have taken) photo from your travels that inspires you to experience Carnaval (the “Photo”). Log in to your personal Instagram account and create a post with the Photo (the “Post”). As part of the Post, draft a caption to the Photo that describes the scene, your experience, and what it would mean to you to win a once in a lifetime Rio Carnaval 2020 experience in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil (the “Caption”).
SUBMIT YOUR POST: Publish your Post, including Photo and Caption, to your Instagram timeline using the hashtags #MoreThanCarnaval and #Contest and tag @passionpassport and @americanair to enter. Please note, you cannot retag a previously published post. Each entry must comply with the following guidelines:
Entry must comply with these Official Rules and all Instagram policies, including its Terms of Use;
Entry cannot be sexually explicit or suggestive, unnecessarily violent or derogatory of any ethnic, racial, gender, religious, professional or age group, profane or pornographic, contain nudity or any materially dangerous activity;
Entry cannot promote alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, firearms/weapons (or the use of any of the foregoing), any activities that may appear unsafe or dangerous, or any particular political agenda or message;
Entry cannot be obscene or offensive, endorse any form of hate or hate group;
Entry cannot defame, misrepresent, or contain disparaging remarks about Challenge Parties or any of their products, services or other people, products, services, or companies;
Entry cannot contain trademarks, logos, or trade dress owned by others, or advertise or promote any brand or product of any kind, without permission, or contain any personal identification, such as license plate numbers, personal names, e-mail addresses, or street addresses;
Entry cannot contain copyrighted materials owned by others (including photographs, sculptures, paintings, and other works of art or images published on or in websites, television, movies, or other media) without permission; Sponsor does not permit the infringement of others’ rights and any use of materials not original to the entrant (except copyrighted materials owned by Sponsor) is grounds for disqualification from the Challenge. Do not copy your favorite movie, book, or photo or include materials, images, graphics, music, or trademarks belonging to any third parties or incorporate the names, voices, likeness, or personas of any party other than yourself unless you have obtained all rights necessary to permit you to use same in connection with your entry and grant the rights herein granted to Sponsor;
No background artwork should appear in an entry unless it is an original work of the entrant. Any artwork, murals, etc. that can be seen in entries must be created solely by the entrant or entrant must be the sole owner of all copyright interests therein;
Entry cannot contain materials embodying the names, likenesses, photographs, or other indicia identifying any person, living or dead, without permission;
Entry photographs must be original and authentic and cannot contain an composite images or similar alterations;
Entry cannot communicate messages or images inconsistent with the positive images and/or goodwill to which Challenge Parties wishes to associate; and
Entry cannot depict, and cannot itself, be in violation of any law.
Following the foregoing instructions will grant you one (1) entry into the Challenge. You must include both hashtags and both tags for your Post to qualify as an entry. LIMIT: one (1) entry per person.
DON’T MISS OUT: The Challenge begins on 12:00:00pm EST on January 18, 2020 and concludes on 11:59pm EST on January 29, 2020. You must submit your entry by 11:59pm EST on January 29, 2020 to be eligible for the Challenge.
WINNER SELECTION: A panel of four (4) judges composed of Creative Professionals/Travel Industry Experts will evaluate each entry based on the following criteria:
Photo quality 15 points
Caption quality 20 points
Relevance to the Challenge theme 15 points
The panel will evaluate each entry based upon the above criteria and award a score of between 0-200 for each entry, based on scores of each above-listed criteria. In the event of a tie, tie breaker will be based upon the highest score in the first judging criteria, continuing thereafter to each judging criteria in order, as needed, to break the tie. The two (2) entries that receive the highest overall score from the panel will be selected as the potential winners of the Challenge, subject to verification. Sponsor’s decisions are final in all matters relating to the Challenge. The potential winners will be notified by Instagram Direct Message on or about January 31, 2020. Potential winners are subject to verification, including verification of age. If a potential winner is found not to be eligible or not in compliance with these Official Rules, or if prize notification or any prize is returned as undeliverable, the potential winner will be disqualified. In the event that a potential winner is disqualified for any reason, Sponsor reserves the right to award the prize to an alternate entrant who will have the next highest scoring entry, even if the disqualified potential winner’s name has been publicly announced. Challenge Parties are not responsible for any change of email address, mailing address and/or telephone number of entrants. Each winner may be issued an IRS 1099 form for prizes of $600.
PRIZE:
Two (2) winners will each receive (i) round trip economy class air transportation for winner and one (1) guest from a major commercial airport near winner’s home within the U.S. to Miami, USA (MIA) or New York, USA (JFK) (airport selection shall be in Challenge Parties’ sole and absolute discretion) on or about February 21, 2020 (Approximate retail value (“ARV”): $2,388); (ii) round trip Business Class air transportation for winner and guest from MIA or JFK to Rio De Janeiro, Brasil (“GIG”) on or about February 21, 2020 and returning February 25, 2020 (ARV: $9,640); (iii) double occupancy standard hotel room for three (3) nights/four (4) days at hotel of Sponsor’s choosing (ARV: $1,500); (iv) two (2) VIP passes to the AA Lounge at the Sambadrome Parade in Rio de Janeiro (“Event”) for February 23, 2020 (ARV: $3,000); and (v) one (1) pre-paid card preloaded with $1,000 for food and other incidentals. ARV of each prize: $17,528. ARV of all prizes: $35,056.
Actual value of trip may vary based on point of departure and airfare fluctuations. Any difference between stated approximate retail value and actual value of prize will not be awarded. All prize details not specified in these Official Rules will be determined in Sponsor’s sole and absolute discretion. Selection of airline and hotel are solely within Sponsor’s discretion. Taxes, meals, luggage fees, resort fees, gratuities, incidental hotel charges, travel upgrades, or any other expenses not specifically listed herein are the sole responsibility of winners. All travel must be taken on dates specified or prize will be forfeited and may be awarded to an alternate; no alternative travel dates are available. Hotel accommodations are subject to availability and certain restrictions may apply. Standard cancellation policies of the participating hotel apply. Challenge Parties are not liable for delays, cancellation, diversions, or substitution, or any act or omission whatsoever, or unforeseen events by any air carriers, hotels, venue operators, transportation companies, prize providers or any other persons providing any prize-related services or accommodations. Winner and travel guest must travel on same itinerary. If winner is eligible, but a minor in his/her state of residence, the travel guest must be winner’s parent or legal guardian. A minor may accompany winner as a travel guest only if the winner is the minor’s parent or legal guardian. Minors must be accompanied at all times during trip (including, but not limited to, in-flight, hotel stay and all prize-related events) by minor’s parent or legal guardian. Travel guests must sign and return a travel release before any ticketing of travel occurs. Winner and guest must have all necessary identification and/or travel documents (e.g., a valid U.S. passport) required for travel. Once travel guests are selected, they may not be substituted, except in Sponsor’s sole and absolute discretion. Airline tickets are non-refundable/non-transferable and are not valid for upgrades and/or frequent flyer miles. All airline tickets are subject to flight variation, work stoppages, and schedule or route changes. If in the judgment of Sponsor, air travel is not required due to winner’s proximity to MIA or JFK, as applicable, ground transportation will be substituted for roundtrip air travel at Sponsor’s sole and absolute discretion. The difference in value will not be awarded to the winner. Additional prize award details and travel information to be provided to the winners at the time of notification. Winners and guests are also responsible for obtaining travel insurance (and all other forms of insurance) at their option and hereby acknowledge that the Challenge Parties have not and will not obtain or provide travel insurance or any other form of insurance. Lost, stolen, or damaged airline tickets, travel vouchers or certificates will not be replaced or exchanged.
Event dates and times are determined in the sole discretion of the Event producer, as applicable, and may be subject to change. Each winner and his/her guest agree to comply with all applicable Event venue rules and regulations. Sponsor, the Event producer, and/or Event venue security reserve the right to remove or to deny entry to any winner and/or his/her guest who engage(s) in an unsafe or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person at the Event. Event attendance may be subject to additional terms and conditions set forth on the back of the Event passes, including but not limited to terms regarding rescheduling due to rain or other reason for cancellation; the terms and conditions of the passes awarded as part of any Prize will govern if the Event is not held due to weather conditions, an act of God, an act of terrorism, civil disturbance or any other reason. No winner will receive compensation from Challenge Parties for tickets that the winner is unable to use for any reason. Each winner agrees that the Prize is awarded pursuant to a revocable, nontransferable license and may not be sold, resold, used for any commercial or promotional purpose whatsoever, auctioned, bartered, assigned, exchanged, placed in commerce, transferred, given away, donated or otherwise conveyed. Winner and his/her guest may be required to produce government-issued identification prior to entering Event venue.
Prizes are non-transferable. No substitutions or cash redemptions. In the case of unavailability of any prize, Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to substitute a prize of equal or greater value. All unspecified expenses are the responsibility of winners. Limit one (1) prize per person or household.

GENERAL:
• This challenge is void where prohibited or restricted by law.
• Entries will be declared made by the authorized account holder of the e-mail address linked to the Instagram account used to submit the entry at the time of entry. “Authorized account holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an email address by an internet access provider, on-line service provider, or other organization (e.g., business, educational institution etc.) that is responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address.
• Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who tampers or attempts to tamper with the entry process or the operation of the Challenge; violates the Official Rules, or acts in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person. CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY AN ENTRANT OR ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE CHALLENGE IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH INDIVIDUAL TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. Challenge Parties and their agencies are not responsible for technical, hardware or software malfunctions, telephone failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections, or failed, incorrect, inaccurate, incomplete, garbled or delayed electronic communications whether caused by the sender or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in this Challenge which may limit the ability to participate or by any human error which may occur in the processing of the entries in this Challenge. Challenge Parties reserve the right to modify, suspend, or cancel the Challenge if it becomes technically corrupted, including from fraud, virus, bugs or other causes beyond their control. In such event, Challenge Parties may elect to award prizes by random drawing from eligible entries received prior to cancellation in their sole discretion.
Entrants may not enter with multiple Instagram accounts nor may entrants use any other device or artifice to register multiple times or as multiple registrants. Any entrant who attempts to enter with multiple Instagram accounts under multiple identities or uses any device or artifice to register/play multiple times will be disqualified and forfeits any and all prizes won, in Sponsor’s discretion.
• Each potential winner will be required to sign and return via overnight UPS and/or email, the Affidavit of Eligibility (“Affidavit”) and the Liability Release and, except where prohibited, Publicity Release (“Release”) forms provided by Sponsor, within five (5) days of receipt in order to receive a prize. If a potential winner fails to return the Affidavit and the Release within five (5) days of receipt thereof or if a potential winner is deemed to be ineligible, the prize will be forfeited and an alternate winner may be selected from among all eligible entries timely received, if time permits.
• No cash redemption or prize substitutions are allowed. Challenge Parties reserve the right to substitute the prize of equal or greater value in their sole discretion. Challenge Parties shall have no responsibility or obligation to a winner who is ineligible for a prize, or is unable to or who does not accept or utilize a prize, for any reason. The winner is responsible for any and all taxes, fees, security and passenger facility charges applicable to the prize, regardless of whether the prize is used or redeemed.
• All travel arrangements must be booked through American Airlines, Inc. in compliance with instructions given to the winners. Winners are responsible for the cost of visa(s), passport(s), and transportation to and from the specified departure airport, meals, and other travel expenses unless stated otherwise. Prizes are non-extendable, non-transferable, and non-cashable.
PUBLICITY RELEASE: Subject to applicable law, each winner irrevocably grants Challenge Parties the right to use the winner’s name, voice, photograph or any other recording of winner, and/or biographical data of winner for advertising, promotional, and/or publicity purposes, worldwide in perpetuity, in all forms of media, including Social media, and the Challenge Parties’ websites and social media platforms, without any obligation or consideration except for the awarding of the prize to the winner.
PRIVACY: Information submitted in connection with the Challenge will be treated in accordance with these Official Rules and the Privacy Policy of American Airlines, Inc., which may be found at https://www.aa.com/i18n/customer-service/support/privacy-policy.jsp.
RELEASE OF LIABILITY: By entering the Challenge, each entrant agrees that American Airlines, Inc., its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies and media including social media (“American Entities”), and their respective shareholders, members, directors, officers, employees, and agents, will have no liability whatsoever for and are fully released and held harmless from any injury, loss or damages of any kind to persons, including death, personal injury, or property damage, due in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from the acceptance, possession, use, non-use or misuse of a prize or participation in this Challenge or participation in any Challenge or prize-related activity. Winner assumes all liability for participation of winner and his/her guest in all aspects of the prize. Under no circumstances will entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and entrant hereby waives all rights to claim, punitive, incidental, consequential, or any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses hereunder. Entrant hereby agrees that all causes of action arising out of or connected with this Challenge, or any prize awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; and any and all claims, judgments, and award shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, excluding attorneys’ fees and court costs.
