Preikestolen, also known as the Pulpit Rock or the Preacher´s Pulpit, is one of the most visited natural tourist attractions in Norway. During the summer of 2013, approximately 200.000 people hiked the 3.8 kilometers to its summit.
A massive cliff 604 meters above Lysefjorden, Preikestolen can be reached by walking a path starting at Preikestolhytta, at an elevation of approximately 270 meters above sea level. The path is relatively clear and easy to navigate and, depending on your experience and fitness level, should only take between 1-3 hours to complete.
Preikestolen is particularly popular during the summer months but is beautiful at other times of the year as well. During the winter months, beware of weather conditions: it can be icy in some places and the weather can change from sun to rain to snow without notice. The best time to visit is between the months of April and October.
Reaching the summit offers the reward of a spectacular view of the Norwegian fjords. It is both humbling and energizing to breathe in the fresh air, and feel and hear the hissing sounds of strong winds.
