Lantau Island is the largest island in Hong Kong and is home to quaint fishing villages, lush green mountains, beaches, the famous “Big Buddha” and the Ngong Ping 360 cable car. Lantau Island can be reached via a scenic ferry ride that departs from Hong Kong’s Central Station. After a beautiful 45-minute ferry ride through teal waters along the Hong Kong skyline and passing by gorgeous green mountains, you arrive at the small town of Mui Wo. From Mui Wo, a bus will take you up through the mountains to the celebrated large seated Buddha statue and the Po Lin Monastery complex. From this area, you can take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car back to Tung Chung.

The walk around the seated Buddha provides a beautiful view off of Lantau Island and the walk around the Po Lin Monastery is a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong Island; however, the most memorable part of my trip to Lantau was the 25 minute ride back to Tung Chung on the Ngong Ping 360 cable car.

The Ngong Ping 360 has two car options: the standard cable car, which has windows around the entire perimeter of the side of the car, and the Crystal Cabin, which is entirely windows including the floor.  While both provide a stunning panoramic view, there is something about gliding along on one of the highest cable cars in the world and seeing the treetops of Lantau and Tung Chung bay below your feet that make a ride in the Crystal Cabin truly unforgettable. Riding the Ngong Ping 360 combines the thrill of riding a roller coaster with one of the most extraordinary views that I have ever experienced.
